Waymon Armstrong – Engineering & Computer Simulations, Inc.
Though there are many faces of Central Florida’s modeling and simulation industry, few are as familiar, and few individuals have been more effective as ambassadors of the area’s homegrown technology industry than Waymon Armstrong. With a story that would provide inspiration to entrepreneurs in any field, Armstrong saw the potential of the simulation industry while at what is now Martin Marietta, and launched his own company, Engineering & Computer Simulations, Inc. (ECS), in 1997.
Commenting on the challenges of the entrepreneurial journey, he said, “Entrepreneurship is messy; it’s hard work; it’s all about delayed gratification. Moreover, it isn’t only the entrepreneurs who need the inspiration, it is the people who work with them and their families.” His entrepreneurial endeavors have paid off both for his company and the community.
“If you get a Purple Heart for being wounded in battle, there should be something like that for entrepreneurs who come back after inevitable failures.”
Recently, ECS won a $29 million contract that taps into ECS advanced learning technologies and methodologies to improve medical education and training for Air Force healthcare providers and patients. But for Armstrong, the potential of modeling and simulation is still in its infancy. “No one has made simulation ubiquitous or pervasive. It is utilized in various industries, but the fields are ripe in countless other arenas,” he said.
