Marni Spence’s career focus is not only on being a premier resource for private businesses and their owners, but also on creating uncommon career development opportunities for others who work with her.
Though most people think of a CPA as an accounting or tax specialist, they are in fact coaches and consultants on all aspects of their clients’ business. Spence observed, “I chose accounting in college because it has such a wide application and I would have a range of opportunities in the business world.”
In fact she considers transitioning from being a tax preparer to a business advisor with a holistic approach as one of her most important and strategic career decisions. “I get to know my clients’ organization and their industry. Also, I am able to deliver services and talented people to put knowledge to work in ways my clients never thought possible.
“The biggest obstacle in my career is maintaining a positive work/life balance,” she admits. “This obstacle did not exist in my 20s, but since I married and had children, my priorities have changed. I am blessed to have competent, smart, hardworking people who are self-starters and help me at work and at home.” Adding, “I realize that it is important to surround myself with people who have a positive attitude and work ethic.” u
