Give Yourself a Gift that Keeps on Giving
On the first day of Christmas, you must plan to succeed instead of failing to plan. Review your vision and business plan – how did you do for 2013, and what are the strategies to achieve the goals you have set for 2014?
On the second day of Christmas, recognize and reward the virtue of LOYALTY in your organization. Our society is falling short on this one. Loyalty is a requirement to be on the ship called success.
On the third day of Christmas, plant good seeds in order to reap a plentiful harvest. The secret to sowing and reaping is what comes in between – the cultivation or “hard work.” Our microwave society has forgotten the skill of cultivation. We plant and expect to instantly reap, forgetting that it must rain in order for things to grow. Ideas, business plans and strategies are all the same; they become a harvest only through cultivation. A business is like a garden; it requires constant tending to keep the weeds out.
On the fourth day of Christmas, recognize that motivation is like a good shower; you need one regularly but are dirty an hour later. You don’t go get motivated; you make a daily choice to either be, or not be, motivated. While good speakers, books and CDs may assist in circumventing negative thoughts from taking root in your mind, it is ultimately a personal choice as to what thinking drives your actions.
On the fifth day of Christmas, seek wisdom in all you do. Most people are so busy trying to earn a living that they never live a life. The wisdom of the entire world is available to you through good books. The view of the world is much easier when you stand on top of the books you have read.
On the sixth day of Christmas, do not let your ego get too close to your position because it causes the truth to disappear. So many times we create fantasies from partial truths because we spend so much time in speculation. Out-of-control egos have caused many leaders to lose all perspective.
On the seventh day of Christmas, recognize the power of cooperation; it’s not who is right but what is right that is the spirit of collaboration. Real cooperation doesn’t come from yielding your values or who you are. We should accept other viewpoints that differ from our own, but nowhere in the definition of tolerance does it say we should sacrifice our own personal values in order to do so.
On the eighth day of Christmas, learn to recognize leaders by their followers. You are not a leader if nobody is following you. There is an old saying, “Leader of one, leader of many – can’t lead one, can’t lead any.” Check the mirror every day to ensure you are leading the most important person – yourself!
On the ninth day of Christmas, take action toward your goal every day. No matter how pure your actions, somebody will be offended because it’s impossible to please 100 percent of people 100 percent of the time. Just remember, dogs don’t bark at parked cars, so just keep moving toward your goal.
On the tenth day of Christmas, be disciplined in the small things because they make the big things happen. The great pyramids were built one brick at a time over a long period of time. So, too, will your dreams be achieved, starting with one thought followed by one action duplicated day after day. We will all pay a price in life and it will either be regret or discipline.
On the eleventh day of Christmas, demonstrate humility and count your blessings. While you may have earned certain things in life, none of us really deserve anything. In fact, most of us are lucky that we don’t get what we truly deserve! Every day, we all walk a tightrope and humility helps keep the balance.
And on the twelfth day of Christmas, consider that faith and fear have the same meaning – they are the things unseen in our future. The difference is the result. One is positive while the other is negative and you will act according to your belief. Courage is the sum total of the faith it takes to act in spite of fear.
Whether you are leading a family, a church, a volunteer organization, a team, a school, a classroom or a company – like it or not, your attitude determines your altitude and the attitude of those you lead. Leadership demands a higher set of standards. As this year comes to an end and a new one begins, what is the condition of your attitude? Guard it well, my friend!
