Global Event Powered by Google Synergy Billing’s Jayson Meyer to Keynote Entrepreneurial Weekend

Red-hot local entrepreneur Jayson Meyer will open the first ever Startup Weekend for Volusia County, where the entrepreneurial environment continues to build momentum. The international program, which is backed by Google, will be held in Daytona Beach November 13-15, 2015, at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

“We are so pleased that Jayson has agreed to speak,” said Jack White, owner of Jack White Land Group, one of the event’s organizers. “He has such a compelling personal story and successful business story. I know that our budding entrepreneurs will be inspired to dream big dreams. This is an exciting time for Volusia County. We are finally starting to see a culture of entrepreneurship begin to develop.”

“I was delighted to be asked to address these aspiring business owners,” added Meyer. “My dream is that we will attract the best and brightest minds in the nation to this area, where they will find support and encouragement to turn their visions into reality. I hope that the entire community can embrace the entrepreneurial culture we are seeking to grow.” Meyer started his first business at 15 years of age and now owns Synergy Billing, recently recognized as one of the fastest growing companies in America.

Startup Weekends are weekend-long, hands-on experiences during which groups of participants create a new business in one weekend. Across the globe, about half of Startup Weekend’s attendees have technical or design backgrounds, while many others have business backgrounds.

Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday, teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practicing LEAN Startup Methodologies, and building a minimally viable product. On Sunday evening, teams demo their prototypes and pitch their business to a panel of experts.

When asked what makes Startup Weekend so exciting, local organizer Dave Spitzer, who attended a Startup Weekend in Brevard County, answered, “It’s really amazing to be in a room full of people committed to this experience for a weekend. It’s exhilarating to see what can be done with great people and a clear focus. There were challenges and it wasn’t easy, but we emerged with a great company idea, new friends, and a very serious sense of accomplishment.”

Along with White and Spitzer, there are a number of local organizers and volunteers, including Mike Zaharios with the Florida Virtual Entrepreneur Center and Mike Bowers, head of the Entrepreneurial Department at Embry Riddle

Mike Zaharios, with the FLVEC, commented on why a startup weekend is so important for this area, “It all comes back to the culture of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurs want to engage with other entrepreneurs. Startup Weekend is one catalyst to facilitate this type of engagement and it will have positive downstream effects on Daytona Beach and Volusia County for the weeks and months to come after the event ends.”

The event will be held at the Henderson Center at the Embry Riddle Campus on November 13-15. For those interested in being a participant, there is an early bird discount. Startup Weekend is also seeking sponsorships and other volunteers.
