Osceola Regional Medical Center Launches Residency Program

In Partnership With UCF College of Medicine

In an effort to address Florida’s shortage of graduate medical education programs and provide quality training to physicians early in their careers, Osceola Regional Medical Center recently welcomed its first medical residents in internal medicine and obstetrics/gynecology.

In partnership with the University of Central Florida College of Medicine and the Department of Veteran Affairs, 16 physicians are beginning three-year internal medicine residencies accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) – with the program eventually increasing to a maximum of 60 residents annually. In addition, four physicians are starting a four-year obstetrics and gynecology program – the first OB/GYN residency approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in the southeastern United States.

Patients benefit from teaching hospitals because the academic environment encourages attending physicians to stay abreast of the latest medical developments and seek innovative solutions to patients’ problems in order to deliver the highest quality education for their residents. Osceola Regional’s graduate medical education programs will bring more trained doctors into the local community – with studies showing that roughly 60 percent of doctors practice where they complete their residencies.

“All of our faculty and staff are proud of the 20 new physicians who have dedicated their lives to serving their patients and professions,” said Osceola Regional Medical Center CEO Robert Krieger. “We are honored to shape the future of healthcare in our diverse community by becoming a teaching hospital and instilling best practices into the next generation of doctors.”

With 321 beds, Osceola Regional is the largest hospital in Osceola County and home to the Central Florida Cardiac & Vascular Institute, the Baby Suites & NICU, and the Orthopedic and Spine Center.
