The American Cancer Society

CH1873The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem since 1913. Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, the ACS has regional and local offices throughout the country to ensure we have a presence in every community. The Central Florida area has 3 local offices in Orlando, Daytona Beach and Melbourne.

Together with their millions of supporters, the American Cancer Society (ACS) saves lives by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.

How They Help You Stay Well

Nearly half of all cancer deaths could be avoided if we did what we know works — live healthier lifestyles, quit smoking, and get our recommended cancer screenings. The American Cancer Society helps take steps every day to stay well. They have the resources, information, and support people need to stay motivated to eat right and get active, quit smoking or help a loved one kick the habit, and understand what cancer screenings you need. Visit their Stay Healthy section and explore the areas below to begin taking steps to stay well and celebrate more birthdays.

How They Help You Get Well

Road To Recovery Driver and PassengerThe American Cancer Society is here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to help guide people through every step of a cancer experience. Whether you’ve recently been diagnosed, are currently going through treatment, or are caring for a loved one with cancer, they are here with information, day- to-day help, and emotional support every step of the way. From free lodging through our Hope Lodge® facilities and transportation offered by the Road To Recovery® program, to help making decisions about care, they offer programs, services, and resources to help people or their loved ones on the journey to getting well.

How They’re Working to Find Cures

The American Cancer Society is the largest nongovernmental funder of cancer research in the United States, having spent more than $4 billion since 1946 to find cures. They’ve had a hand in nearly every major cancer breakthrough of the last century, including confirming the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, establishing the link between obesity and multiple cancers, developing drugs to treat leukemia and advanced breast cancer, and showing that mammography is the most effective way to detect breast cancer.

They fund both external research projects through grants and scholarships as well as conduct our own research into cancer epidemiology, surveillance, and health policy. They fund beginning researchers with cutting-edge ideas early in their careers — 47 of whom have gone on to win the Nobel Prize, the highest accolade in scientific achievement.

How They Fight Back

NCIC OperatorACS works with lawmakers to pass national and state laws to defeat cancer and rally communities worldwide to join our fight. Defeating cancer is as much a matter of public policy as scientific discovery. Every day, elected officials and policy makers at the federal, state, and local levels make decisions that affect the lives of more than 11 million cancer patients and survivors, their families and caregivers, and all those at risk for developing cancer. Advocacy is a critical part of the Society’s mission. To that end, the Society and its nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), work in partnership to ensure that elected officials and policy makers at all levels of government make the fight against cancer a top national priority.

They also fight back through the American Cancer Society’s signature events. These inspiring, uplifting events are great at bringing the fight against cancer directly into your community. From black-tie galas to community events like Relay For Life® and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer®, we have an event that will suit everyone’s interests and let you join in the spirit of camaraderie and compassion as we work together to save lives from cancer. Learn more about our events and other opportunities to fight back with your community by visiting www.cancer.org or contacting our National Cancer Information Center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-227-2345.
