UCF Introduces Big Data Masters Program

Orlando, FL, May 9, 2016– Gary T. Leavens, Ph.D., University of Central Florida (UCF) Professor and Department Chair of Computer Science Faculty, is pleased to announce that UCF will offer a Master of Science in Data Analytics (MSDA) program beginning in Fall 2016. Data Analytics is an emerging field, as companies are looking for people with technical skills to manage and interpret big data. Ivan Garibay, Ph.D., M.S. has been appointed the program director.

“We wanted to create an elite program so our College of Engineering and Computer Science and our College of Sciences worked together to produce, what we feel, is the best program in the State of Florida,” explained Dr. Garibay. “We selected a specialized faculty who are experts in their fields to develop a concise and convenient program that focuses on core skills that will provide a competitive advantage in any sector requiring data analytics,”

This 30 credit hour interdisciplinary program is offered jointly by the departments of Computer Science and Statistics, and can be completed over 20 months via face-to-face instruction by UCF faculty on evenings and weekends at UCF’s Orlando campus. Applications will be accepted through June 15. Enrollment is limited to 34 students for the inaugural class.

MSDA will utilize the technical aspects of big data analytics, including algorithm design, programming, acquisition, management, mining, analysis, and interpretation of data. High-demand/high wage jobs associated with Data Analytics include Data Scientist, Data Analyst, Data Architect, Database Administrator, Data Engineer, Data Mining Specialist, and Business Intelligence Analyst.Monogram300
