Corridor Universities Rank Among Top 100 Worldwide in Patents

For Sixth Consecutive Year, UCF, USF and UF Rival Other Research Hubs in High Tech Growth

HEATHROW, Fla. (June 5, 2018) – The Florida High Tech Corridor’s three research universities –– the University of Central Florida (UCF), the University of South Florida (USF), and the University of Florida (UF) –– ranked amongst the top 100 universities worldwide granted U.S. utility patents in 2017, according to a report released today by the National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association.

For the sixth consecutive year, The Corridor’s three universities continued to produce more university patents than any other globally recognized centers of innovation.  UCF, USF and UF were collectively granted a total of 266 patents during the 2017 calendar year, while 189 patents were granted to the three universities of North Carolina’s Research Triangle and 219 patents were granted to the eight universities of the University of Texas System.

“The university partners of the Florida High Tech Corridor continue to produce incredible work in patenting, reaffirming The Corridor’s position as a nationally competitive high tech hub,” said Ed Schons, president of the Florida High Tech Corridor Council.  “This report is a testament to the creative thinking and innovative spirit embodied by The Corridor and our partners, and we look forward to a bright future full of continued growth in our region.”

The Top 100 report recognizes the importance of patenting, licensing and commercialization in university research, highlighting The Corridor region’s sustained growth as a high tech hub through continued innovation and technology transfer from universities to the marketplace.

The report utilizes data acquired from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.  View the full report atwww.academyofinventors.com/pdf/top-100-universities-2017.pdf.
